Tips and resources to support children birth to age five
What is a free or low cost outdoor activity you like to engage in with your child?
We in the Puget Sound area are especially blessed with weather that encourages outdoor play almost every month of the year. It’s seldom too hot or too cold to be out even with infants and a sunny attitude is all it takes to fill even damp days with fun.But maybe you’re out of ideas.
Tired of going to the same playground or walking around the same park? Maybe you'd like to know others' favorite outdoor locations that cost little or nothing to enjoy...
This week, my grandkids and I are going to take a ride on the West Seattle water taxi. The 15-minute cruise from Alki Beach to Pier 50 downtown is just right for short attention spans. We’ll take a sandwich lunch and picnic on the downtown side, then catch the next boat back to West Seattle. The fare is just $3.50 for adults and kids under 5 ride free.

My daughter and I love going to Farmer's Markets. There is all kinds of activities; other kids to watch, pets, music, and great new local foods to taste and discover. She loves being in her carrier with me and watching all the action. It is always fun to gather up some great local fresh foods and take them home and cook them up and eat them up together. She is just turning one this month, and already eats any new item I offer her. She particularly loves the music at the events, and the musicians seem to really appreciate the littlest ones digging their tunes!!

We are fortunate to have a small animal attraction near us, a few animals for petting a dino exhibit and other animals to view and learn about, the cost is only a couple of dollars per child and adults are free. We also enjoy the U-pick farms in the area, a nice stroll thru different orchards, taste testing, fresh air, all that and its free! We can pretend to be different characters while we pick, Snow white and the apple, strawberry shortcake, etc. As an extension we take our fruit and have a day to make goodies, we so like ice cream made with fresh strawberries! We also make apple sauce, apple pie, blueberry pie, strawberry shortcake, freezer jams, We enjoy this part the most!

We like to meet with friends at the local parks for play dates. We also go for walks with the dog and explore the neighborhood. Picnics are a great way to spend the afternoon and you can even do it in the backyard!
