My baby will be a year old this Friday and we read together very often. I wish I could say every night, but I'll admit we skip a few nights now and then. I started reading with my baby when he was a couple of months old, much to my…

Helping Toddlers “Read”

Two-year-old Arianna can “read” her favorite Scooby-Do book. She sits down and recites the first three or four pages – that’s as far as she’s memorized the text – then hands it to me to read the rest. She believes that she’s reading and she “reads” with feeling, even inserting little asides (like “uh-oh” after a scary plot twist). This is great fun and really cute to watch. But it’s far more important than that.Look at what this toddler has achieved:How to hold a book and turn the pages at…See More

So I have been drawn into this commercial several times & always write it off as a gimic. However, when I noticed my little girl was getting behind on her language I ordered it. Not because I thought it would teach her to read, but I thought it…

Why Twos Become Tyrants

Remember back to your days as a third- or fourth-grader? Someone (maybe you?) was always picked last for kickball and was positioned to play in a spot where he couldn’t have much effect, one way or the other, on the team’s success. Then one day the teacher appointed this kid team captain and he had the power to choose who would play on his side and where they would be positioned in the outfield. At last the opportunity for some pay-back! Oh, the joys of power!Your two-year-old feels much the…See More

Guiding a Child's Behavior

At an event this past weekend, I watched a mother follow her probably-three-year-old son around the hall, making suggestions for the boy’s behavior that were totally ignored. Obvious to any onlooker was the fact that the child was in charge. This is clearly not right. If you’d asked this mother – in a meeting over coffee, for instance, with her son nowhere in sight – if three-year-olds should be able to make all their own decisions and ignore their parents, I’m pretty certain she would say…See More

We make frequent trips to the library. We don't always 'read' books while we are there, but being exposed to books, magazines, and words in a fun enviornment is always a pleasure. Here is a fun brochure about libraries and early…

Your Baby Can Read?

That commercial…. I’m sure you’ve seen it… Can it possibly be true? Can a child of six months recognize words presented on flashcards? Can a child of two recite whole passages of Charlotte’s Web? Yes. And yes. The question is: are these reading? No, they’re not. Think about it. Reading requires an ability to not only recognize words or memorize passages (in fact, memorization is not required for reading at all). Laboratory rats and maybe a border collie dog can be taught to recognize words but…See More

Toddlers are amazing and often under-estimated. I am constantly convincing parents that their toddlers are capable of all sorts of amazing things! Nice to see that others understand the amazing toddler.

Toddler Thinking Power

It was, perhaps, the perfect experimental set-up: two identical sippy cups positioned side-by-side on the living room floor, one holding juice, the other milk. Nonetheless, I was startled by what happened next.

Twenty-month-old Sara saw the cups and got down on her belly on the floor. She lowered her chin so her eyes were at cup-level and then announced: “More juice.” Puzzled, I repeated, “More juice?” thinking that somehow she wanted more to drink. But she pointed to the cup… Continue
