Children Ready for School or Schools Ready for Children?

High Scope Foundation has worked for years on the issue of readiness. It has decided that the problem is not in the children we love, but in the ways our schools invest in, and are committed to, the steps needed for all children to step successfully forward, no matter what has happened to them before.

Getting children school ready is a judgment about little kids who have no choice in the ways they are… Continue

Political Action

http://thehill.com/op-eds/the-imperative-of-early-education-2009-03-16.html

George Millar, a Member of the House of Representatives from California:

We must begin these conversations by asking two key questions: One, what do working families need, especially in this economy? And two, what can we do to support efforts to deliver the high-quality care and education that will yield the kind of results these children need?

The answer to the first question is… Continue

Recommendations from Europe

I like to explore what other countries are doing, because we can learn both who we are and who they are by exploring the differences. I want to share a bit from Starting Strong II. The Organisation for Economic and Cooperative Development whose members are from 30 countries in Europe issued their report on early education and care in 11/9/2006 called Starting Strong II. This is a report of research done in 20 of the OECD countries. The executive summary is available… Continue

A Proposal for Early Learning Legislation in Washington

I have not seen the kind of law written for the legislature representing the views of professionals and pedagogues in early education, so I wrote one. It is totally plagiarized from the Ministry of Education of British Columbia, Canada. I hope they don't mind. You can download their Early Learning Framework from this site and see how much I stole.

This beautiful little girl is my 6 mth old granddaughter. She was born in August to my oldest daughter Jordan (17 at the time). Mom and Dad are now married and temporarily living with me until they leave for college in June. She is my little sweetheart and having her in my home the past six months has been the sweetest of experiences. So nice to have such an angel around to balance out the other 3 teenage girls I have who just "hate" their mom! LOL. Life has been a changing in the past year!!! I loved reading your blog.
