"Spring! Oh no" I thought. Not another presentation on phonological awareness! There must be some newer title I could use to lighten the evening presentation. Why, maybe even wake everyone up with laughter. So off I went to the stacks on a hunt for the book that would add a touch of humor for both the adults and children that would be attending. Panic was setting in as I neared the row of authors starting with “T”. And there it was, Rhyming Dust Bunnies, by the deliciously funny author, Jan Thomas.

This is a unique picture book that will be enjoyed by everyone, from the very young though adults. There is so much to like about this book-the simple illustrations, after all how complicated can a dust bunny be, the bright colors and of course the humor. From the minute the book is opened the reader knows they are in for a fun book sharing time.

Adults and children will be laughing right from the start with Ed, Ned, Ted and Bob who for the most part rhyme all the time, except for Bob who confuses the other dust bunnies by his inability to rhyme. From the start when they try to rhyme with car and Bob yells “Look” the humor and suspense keeps building.
Rhyming is fun and this book will be a great start for playing with words.

Another book that I like to use for phonological awareness is I Ain’t Gonna Paint No More! By Karen Beaumont. It is fun to use the book to encourage children to add the rhyming word when the reader pauses for a response. It is not only the use of language but the creative use of color-starting from black and white and adding vibrant colors with each additional rhyme. It is another book that will keep adults and children entertained.

I can't wait to read Rhyming Dust Bunnies and share it with assorted family members - young and old. Incidentally, there is a song that would make a great tie-in with the book. Look for Caspar Babypants aka Chris Ballew - lead singer of The Presidents of the United States - is a local performer who entertains children and adults...at the same time! The song "Poor Dust Bunnies" can be found on the Here I Am album. It's actually a very lovely and touching song. Another tie-in - Sweepy, Sweepy, Sweepy by Woody Guthrie. I'm afraid I will never stop being a preschool teacher at heart.
