Snowy days are perfect for reading stories - but who can help you find a great sharing book? The Yakima Valley Libraries staff has collaborated to create a list of 100 children's books for the young and young at heart.
I want to spread the word about a new childrens book recently published titled The Big Book of Exclamations. The book is designed by a pediatric speech pathologist to promote speech sound development and imitation of gestures, sounds, and words. The book doesnt have a story to read. Instead, along the bottom of each page there are "prompts" which teach parents how to act out the illustrations and use gestures, sounds, and word approximations at a level their child can imitate! The book is fun - even minimally verbal children can feel successful using simple gestures, or sounds & word approximations on each page!! The book shows parents fun new ways to stimulate their child's speech development and teaches them how to "expand" on what their child can do. The book "grows" with the child as they move from using gestures and noises, into word approximations, simple 2 word phrases, and eventually sentences! You can see some of the illustrations and prompts first hand and get a better feel for the book at the website which is http://thebigbookofexclamations.com/. Do check it out and the author/speech pathologist is willing to answer questions via email!
IT IS A GREAT RESOURCE FOR BOTH PARENTS AND EDUCATORS ALIKE!!
