Tips and resources to support children birth to age five

Yakima Valley Libraries celebrates Week of the Young Child

Yakima Valley Libraries is celebrating the Week of the Young Child, April 11 through 17, with storytimes and preschool open house events at many library locations. This year’s theme is “Early Years are Learning Years,” and Yakima Valley Libraries has a long history of providing resources and experiences for young library users and their caregivers.

Preschool storytimes are regularly offered at many locations, and feature songs, stories and activities appropriate for the children attending. Parents also learn at storytime – library staff members show parents and caregivers how to foster early literacy skills. Special open house events scheduled during the Week of the Young Child will offer make-and-take preschool literacy-building crafts. Information to help parents and caregivers prepare children to learn to read will be available at all events during the celebration.

The Week of the Young Child is an annual national celebration designed to focus public attention on the needs of young children and their families and to recognize the early childhood programs and services that meet those needs. Children’s events at Yakima Valley Libraries support parents and caregivers as children’s first teachers of the skills they need before they can learn to read.
